Ice Maker Jammed? Here’s What to Check First
A jammed or frozen-solid ice maker is one of the most common problems we get called out for in Fargo, and it is also one of the cheapest to put right, provided you know where to look first.
Start with the water line
In a Fargo winter, a supply line that runs near an exterior wall or through an unheated space can partially freeze. It does not take a full blockage; even a restriction is often enough to stop the ice maker filling properly or to leave it jammed mid-cycle. This is far and away the most common cause we see locally, so it is worth ruling out before anything else.
Then look in the bin
Sometimes the mechanism is fine and the ice itself is the problem. Ice that has partially melted and refrozen, after a door left ajar or a brief power cut, can fuse into a single solid mass that seizes the auger. It is an easy thing to check, and it saves you assuming a part has failed when nothing actually has.
The shut-off arm and the inlet valve
If the line is clear and the bin is not fused together, two components are left to consider. The shut-off arm is the small lever that tells the ice maker when the bin is full; stuck in the wrong position, it will either refuse to make ice or refuse to stop. Failing that, a water inlet valve that has stopped letting water through is the next likely culprit, and that one is really a job for a technician.
A note on Samsung and LG
If your refrigerator is a Samsung or an LG, a jammed ice maker is not necessarily bad luck. It is a known weak point on several models from both manufacturers, and it is one of the repairs we carry out most often on those two brands.
What is worth checking yourself
If it is winter and the supply line is accessible, look for visible frost or a section that feels frozen solid. Sometimes the problem clears on its own once things warm up again. A line that keeps freezing, though, usually points to insulation that needs attention rather than a fault in the appliance itself.
